NYSHS Meeting 2008

(Recap)

We all had a great time and it was a wonderful learning experience last weekend (March 7-8, 2008) at the NYSHS Meeting in Saratoga Springs, NY. The educational filled program started out on Friday with Jim Millos lecturing about impact and advances from grossing to processing and Dr. Andrew Torres talking about the problems with Prostrate cancer. Ada Feldman gave her first of two lectures on shipping and transporting specimens and chemicals. Beth Sheppard finished the afternoon going through the steps involved with standardization and validation of IHC testing.

Friday evening at the awards banquet, three important awards were handed out:

  • Thermo Scientific Anatomic Pathology Award was presented to: Sarah Mack of the Center for Pediatric Biomedical Research, URMC.

  • Dominic Europa Award was presented to: Carolyn Demarinis, Section Supervisor, Saratoga Hospital.

  • The Presidents Award was presented to: Amy Farnan, Supervisor Histology at Memorial Hospital, Albany

Saturday morning started with Dr. Yao from URMC speaking about biospecimens and tissue microarray core paraffin blocks. That was followed by Dr. Pilon giving us a small sample of some of his interesting cases and how histology played a vital role in the diagnosis. After lunch and the membership meeting we were thrilled to have Ada Feldman speaking on troubleshooting H&E staining. Stephanie Freeman spoke on the injuries caused by microscopic work and Anne Horstmann gave a lecture on dealing with those difficult conversations and disciplinary actions.

Fun and true learning was had by all. Everyone went home with something because of the great and excellent support from our many vendors in attendance!!! Thanks to them, this meeting would not have been possible.
