Region 1 Histotechnologist Symposium
Histology Career Day
April 27th, 2012
The purpose of Career Day is to attract High School Students and expose them to the science of Histotechnology. The Histotechnology profession is an exciting and worthwhile career path for students interested in the biological sciences. Employment opportunities exist in clinical/hospital, research, veterinary and pharmaceutical industries. The educational requirements in New York State are a 2 year degree from an accredited Histotechnology Program in order to be licensed to practice in NYS. Salaries can range from $35,000 to $80,000 annually.
Students participating in the Region 1 Career Day will be provided with a Histology career brochure. The High School Students will also be able to speak with current college students who are enrolled in a Histotechnology program in NYS. At the end of the educational sessions, the student will receive a bag of Histology goodies to take home with them. The following are components of the career day program:
- The program will include a short lecture about Histotechnology.
- The students will be guided through the different work stations and will participate in the some of the procedures performed in the Histology laboratory.
- The students will observe gross tissue dissection demonstration where they will see human or animal tissue specimens being prepared for processing with the details of the steps required to prepare the tissue for the processing step.
- Embedding – the students will observe the embedding process and be given the opportunity to embed a non-biological sample, such as a flower or bead, in paraffin wax. They will be able to take home their embedded sample.
- Microtome sectioning – the students will observe an actual tissue specimen be sectioned on a microtome and transferred to a tissue flotation bath where the tissue will be mounted on to a glass microscope slide.
- Staining – The students will see unstained slides and stained slides with an explanation of how the staining procedure is carried out and will be given staining brochures.
- Microscope – The students will see the stained tissue section on a Digital Microscope.
